Roc‑A‑Fella Records was created in 1994 by Shawn “Jay‑Z” Carter, Damon “Dame” Dash, and Kareem “Biggs” Burke as an independent outlet after major labels initially passed on Jay‑Z’s debut. The label’s first release, Reasonable Doubt (1996), set the foundation for its rise and led to a joint venture with Priority Records, followed by a broader partnership with Def Jam.
