This exceptionally rare December 31, 1979 “New Year’s Eve Funk Jam Boogie” flyer captures hip-hop at one of its most important crossroads—before the culture had entered the mainstream and while the Bronx scene was still being built from the ground up.
 
Bambaataa was one of the foundational DJs of early Bronx hip-hop, helping shape the culture's DJ, MC and party traditions and later driving the electro sound that would become enormously influential. Jazzy Jay was another pioneering DJ who was active in New York's early hip-hop scene.
This is the era when hip-hop was still primarily experienced through neighborhood jams, community centers and local DJs rather than records, radio and major concert tours. Original flyers from this period are now recognized by major cultural institutions and collectors as important documentation of hip-hop's earliest history.
