Before Run The Jewels, EL-P teamed up with Amaechi Uzoigwe in 1999 to found Definitive Jux Records, an undercut hip-hop label that pioneered the independent, backpack sound. The roster boasted the likes of Mr. Lif, Del the Funky Homosapien, Aesop Rock, and many more acts that came together to counter the mainstream direction of Hip-Hop at the time, instead delivering a distinctive sound in the underground.
